In more than three decades of competitive tennis — from the junior circuit to college tennis to adult play — I had used a variety of racket brands.

But never Prince, the pioneering company known for creating the first oversize and long-body frames. I found the spherical head unwieldy, the ball difficult to control and the overall effect too springy for my admittedly loopy strokes.

Offered the chance for a racket customization run-through that some of the top players in the world receive, I figured it was worth a go. And I was curious to see if the most skilled customizers in the world could find a frame I liked and finely tune it to my particular style.

I met with Prince's team in August on the eve of the U.S. Open — the day Hurricane Irene was supposed to inundate Manhattan (it didn't happen).
