Home comforts for Cumbria and Lancashire soldiers

LAKELAND soldiers serving in Afghanistan are being sent some love from home.

Local knitters have been making hats, scarves and greetings cards for servicemen and women with the First Battalion, the Duke of Lancaster Regiment.

Soldiers then send the cards back to loved ones in Cumbria and Lancashire.

Joyce Cowin, of EJ Crafts, Market Street, Ulverston, said: “We make greeting cards to send but it’s so cold out there now that we appealed to our knitters to make beanie hats and scarves – and they are appreciated as well.”

When her point of contact to distribute the cards ‘dried up’, Mrs Cowin was forced to turn down offers.

But regular helper Ruby Egerton got in touch with the Army Recruitment Office in Lancaster, who said it would accept donations and distribute them to local soldiers.

Mrs Cowin was also spurred on by a letter her father sent when he was a serving soldier.
