But while Mike Shannon and John Rooney were describing the game of the millennium Thursday night on the radio, there I was at my computer, enrapt by a 4-year-old documentary on the Tocharian people of western China.

The who of where? Turns out that scientists have uncovered remarkable mummies indicating that European ancestors made their way to the Xinjiang Uygar region of western China, where they mingled with the Chinese centuries before anyone thought East met West. But this is what really caught my ear:

"One of the most important discoveries is a fully clothed woman wearing a conical hat symbolic of a high priestess," the narrator said of one mummy that has been dated to at least 300 B.C. "It would one day become the hallmark of witches in Europe."

It was yet more proof that such hats apparently have been a favorite of wizards, warlocks and witches for centuries.

Ancient Persian magicians reportedly decked themselves out in pointy hats. Some Egyptian pharaohs had tall, domed headpieces. So did Hittite royalty. A coin from the Etruscan city of Luna bears the image of a woman -- thought to be Diana, the goddess of witches to some -- wearing a conical hat.
