Every year, my kids and I go through this debate about what creature or movie character they should become for Halloween.
It's a debate I wish I could avoid, because I've never been much of a planner. We all have different areas where we shine, and costume making is definitely not mine.
We've had a lot of ghosts, witches and zombies over the years, simply because they're the easiest outfit to throw together. A white sheet, a big black hat, or gobs of face paint and ripped clothes, and you're set.
Let's face it, we kind of get the short end of the stick when it comes to Halloween in Canada. If you're lucky, Halloween night is mild enough to get away with nothing but your costume for warmth. But it's kind of hard to tell whether you're Jack Sparrow, Harry Potter or an Angry Bird when you're all bundled up in a jacket and toque, wearing Kamiks instead of pirate boots.
One year, my son insisted on wearing a very form fitting ninja outfit, but ended up looking like a ticked off Michelin man with his down-filled parka stuffed underneath it.
