Military museums offer thrills, noted collections
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.: Military museums allow visitors to experience the rough jerk of a parachute jump, the barked orders of an Army drill sergeant or the segregated training endured by the first African-Americans to enter the Marine Corps.
Whether you are a hardened military veteran or one who has never worn a uniform, several military museums in the Carolinas offer extensive lessons in military service as Nov. 11, Veterans Day, draws near.
In Fayetteville, N.C., the Airborne and Special Operations Museum attracts 120,000 to 175,000 visitors every year and tells the story of how America’s military developed the strategy of dropping fully armed soldiers into battle from the skies. A 15-foot sculpture of the paratrooper dubbed “Iron Mike” stands guard at its glass-and-girder front entry, which evokes both the 250-foot “jump towers” that paratroopers use for training and the wingspan of the C-47 aircraft that dropped soldiers onto battlefields in World War II.
Recruitment and Containment: Hollywood Celebrates Military ...
We are pleased to announce the third lecture in our series on American life and culture: “Recruitment and Containment: Hollywood Celebrates Military Women in WWII,” which will be given by Professor Yvonne Tasker from the School of Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia on Tuesday 22nd November, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
During WWII Hollywood supported efforts to recruit women into military service, whether as nurses, marines, WACS or WAVES. Movies echoed contemporary recruitment campaigns in emphasising women’s service as patriotic, necessary but temporary. Both recruiters and filmmakers had to contend with negative views of women’s service, which some regarded as unfeminine or even amoral. This illustrated talk looks at some of the ways in which movies managed this, exploring the stories of military women in drama, romance, musicals and comedies of the period.

Editorial: Military Ball to honor World War II veterans ...
Author Tom Brokaw called them "the Greatest Generation."
This weekend in Alpena members of that generation, specifically World War II veterans, will be honored and recognized at events around the community. Tonight is the Military Ball at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center. The evening's entertainment features The Manhattan Dolls, three women who will sing World War II era music and songs for the event. In addition, special recognition will be given to World War II veterans there.
Saturday the festivities continue with "A Stars and Stripes Salute to Alpena's veterans" in Alpena. The Manhattan Dolls will perform throughout the day at various locations throughout the community, and several merchants are saluting veterans all day long, especially World War II veterans.
Last year the staff at the Jesse Besser Museum honored World War II veterans with a special display that lasted a significant portion of the year.
