Dorothy Williams loads up the kitchen table with sandwiches, scones and chocolate cake then offers tea or coffee as husband Wallace takes a seat next to the scones.

After we’ve been taken care of, she retreats to the back veranda perched on a high bank overlooking a bend in the Mataganah River not far north of the Wyndham township. It’s a fantastic spot - deep water holes in the river below providing a place to swim even in the driest years.

“It was fencing that gave us enough money to pay off this house,” says Wallace. “Funny thing is there was a fella who proposed to Dot when she was very young and he was a fencer. She said she’d never marry a fencer, well 10 years later that’s what she did.”

Wallace Williams came to Wyndham as a seven-year-old with his family just as the 1939-45 drought started to bite.
