Gas prices rise slightly
The U.S. Energy Department reported last week that demand for diesel fuel rose by 2.5 percent last month in response to some increased activity in the manufacturing sector. At the same time, the nation’s inventory of crude oil fell to its lowest level since February 2010. The inventory fell by 333 million barrels to 4.7 billion barrels. Analysts pointed to an increasingly active economy as the reason for the inventory draw down.

In published reports, Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg Survey, said both crude oil and ethanol prices have risen recently. Because both are vital ingredients in the production of gasoline, the higher production costs were passed on to drivers in the form of higher gas prices. Lundberg said both crude oil and ethanol rose by about a dime a gallon, primarily due to the weakening U.S. dollar.
AAA officials said international financial issues are also affecting gas prices.
