Royal Winnipeg Ballet cancels Svengali tour dates
, To Toronto for two dates in January before continuing onto Hamilton, Ont. and London, Ont.
But the four performances have been cancelled and ticket orders will be refunded, the company said in a statement issued Tuesday.
"Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet does not have a history of cancelling shows, but is currently facing unprecedented fiscal pressures with live performance touring in some Canadian markets, and wishes to conduct its not-for-profit activities responsibly," organizers said, adding an apology to ticketholders.
RWB executive director Jeff Herd said ticket sales for those shows were poor, adding there is currently fierce competition for the entertainment dollar.
"Rather than continuing on and taking a huge risk, and then maybe disappointing people once tickets are bought, we would pull back at this point in time to be prudent," Herd told CBC News.
"What we're finding is that the market is changing quite drastically and all of us, I think, are adapting to that," he added.
