In the grimy London of 1935, eleven-year-old Dominic Walker has lost his voice. His mother is sick and his father’s unemployed. Rescue comes in the form of his Uncle Roo, who arrives to take him and his young sister, Marlo, to Cornwall. There, in a boarding house populated by eccentric residents, Marlo, who keeps a death grip on her copy of The New Art of Cooking, and Dominic, armed with Incredible Adventures for Boys: Colonel Lawrence and the Revolt in the Desert, find a way of life unlike any they have known. Dominic’s passion for Lawrence of Arabia is tested when he finds himself embroiled in a village uprising against a band of travelers who face expulsion. In defending the vulnerable, Dominic learns what it truly means to have a voice.Trilby Kent brilliantly handles a far-off time and place to present a story of up-to-the-minute relevance.

Diamond Vintage Ball a glamorous success

Held in the De Vere suite of the Royal Bath Hotel, the evening was packed with entertainment and quality cuisine, with all proceeds going to the Lewis-Manning Hospice in Parkstone.

Ladies adorned long, silky, sheen dresses, while the men wore sharp two-piece suits with bow ties.

As guests arrived from 7:30pm, they were treated to canapés, Champagne and the beautiful harmonies of the Panini Sisters, a vintage vocal trio complete with sassy choreography.

Afterwards, guests were then seated for a full three-course meal, created by the Royal Bath Hotel’s head chef, David Whiffen, which included potted shrimp with lemon butter for starter and a ‘posh pie n mash’ for the main course.

Hosting the Diamond Vintage Ball was radio veteran Steve Power of Wave105 FM. He told BHbeat: “It has been a lovely evening, and obviously any event such as this has one main aim – tonight that’s to raise funds for the Lewis-Manning Hospice.

Trilby Kent – Stones for my Father | Inspired-Quill

With the British invaders only on the horizon, Corlie Roux’s childhood is about to be turned upside down. With the Boer War still in full swing, Corlie, her stern mother and her younger siblings are all driven from their homes on the Transvaal, to an internment camp along with other Boer families. All the young girl has to sustain her through her ordeal at Kroonstad is her resilience and her devotion to her country…and a soldier from Canada with a few surprises up his sleeve.

Alright, I’ll admit it. Before reading this book, I had absolutely no idea what the Boer War entailed. Oh, I knew the name of course, but not any of the particulars. So instead of reading the book ‘blindly’ as it were, I decided to get some context for the setting and promptly found some information pertaining to the Boer War. After that, I settled down and read the book through in just three sittings…although if I had the time to spare, I would have sat down and finished it all in one go.
