Godden has retained a Jewish flavour by using klezmer music as part of the ballet's pastiche score, which also includes composers such as Rachmaninov and Liszt.

"The klezmer music is a little bit of a haunting of what the novel was," he says, adding that the novel draws parallels between artistic gifts and Jewish blood.

The ballet's atmosphere is suggestive of Germany in the decadent Weimar Republic era, 1919-33 (where Maddin set his film treatment), but it's deliberately not pinned down. "It's not set in any time period," Godden says. In a key departure from the novel, Godden envisions Svengali as a very young man. As the father of two elementary-aged sons, he says, he is interested in how society influences boys to regard and relate to women.

Svengali is first seen practising hypnosis on a doll and taking its clothes off. He desires women as a voyeur. "He treats them as objects for his own fantasy," says Godden, noting, "His mother also objectifies women by trying to turn them into romanticized versions of herself.
