Gas prices up, but may come back down
"We're likely to see gas prices continue to increase this week unless oil prices fall," said AAA spokewoman Jessica Brady.
AAA’s survey showed prices nationwide rose an average of 6 cents a gallon during the past week while prices in Florida rose by 7 cents a gallon.
In interviews over the weekend, Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey, Inc. said gas prices at the pump remain about 23-percent over year-ago levels. Lundberg told CNN there are two factors limiting demand and holding prices down - unemployment and underemployment. She also said that it is possible that prices could resume the downward path they had been on earlier this fall.
The rise in oil prices began after talks got underway to come up with a solution to the European debt crisis. Analysts said another factor that appeared to contribute to the rise in oil prices and subsequent hike in gas prices was a snippet of positive news.
Last week the U.S. Commerce Department reported retail sales were up by just over one percent.
