I found the signage on the ground floor of the museum a bit confusing to work out without being on the guided tour, which actually looked really good. Each part of the hat making process is explained on panels and there are old videos of the factories. The machinery was donated by the William Plant hat makers in 1976 after the death of the proprieter. As with many industries there were unions and strikes and the exhibition addressed the differences between the male and female factory worker. Male hatters actualy saw women as a threat because they worked for a lower wage so were seen as cheaper labour for factory owners. As a result it wasn't until later that women were given the same union rights as men. The rest of the museum had extensive hats on display, from all around the world, up to contemporary hats such as these Vivienne Westwood ones above.
